Mike Best web editor Black UK Online was launched in August (2003) in a wave of publicity at London’s Notting Hill Carnival. Since then there has been no turning back, as the Company’s five-member team seek out new opportunities for its widely acclaimed website: www.blackukonline.com
Some critics said it would not survive, because the majority of black people did not have computer at home and still preferred reading newspapers. Despite that myopic and jaundiced view of life in 21st century Britain, the black and Asian communities have proved them wrong. Research has showed that new technology has brought communications and computers within the affordable range of most households and small businesses. In addition, many parents are determined not to be upstaged by their young children and have returned to classrooms and colleges at their own leisure, for basic IT training.
Our website: www.blackukonline.com is gaining considerable support from the communities we serve. We are working closely with a wide variety of groups, local councils, and corporate organisations to achieve our long-term goal of becoming a leading source of news and information for Britain’s black and Asian communities.
Black Media Network is the parent company of blackukonline.com has won a number of awards since launching: ** Winner Birmingham Telegraph Community Services Award 2008 ** * * Winner Business Links for Suffolk Social Enterprise Award 2006 * * * * Nominated Edgestart Award Social Enterprise Category 2006 * * * * Shortlisted Finalist in Running the Gauntlet Competition 2005 * * * * Highly Commended Finalist in the DTi- E Commerce Awards 2005 Best Use of Teleworking * * * * Finalist in Start Up Awards Community Impact Award 2005 * * * * Finalist in the DTi E-Commerce Awards 2004 * * * * Shortlisted for the Start Up Awards 2004 * * * * Winner of the Windrush Small Business Champion Award 2004 * *
Black UK Online was set up to provide a unique blend of local, national, and international news, lifestyle, views, reviews, profiles and entertainment. Our main objective is to widen thought-provoking editorial beyond the black experience and to reflect more fully, the multicultural Britain that we live in today.
Meeting the changing needs of our communities -the situation has changed – more interaction has been taken place among communities through inter-relations, mixed marriages etc. thus negating the concept of separate development. All communities are affected by political and economic considerations and these will have social implications for most groups and cultures, to name a few - immigration, housing, education, travel, finance etc
Our aim is to highlight the rich diversity of Britain’s multicultural communities across England, Wales and Scotland and the significant contribution that they are make to the British economy. Specialist media organisations originally set up to redress the individual needs of particular groups, no longer hold a monopoly on multiculturalism.
Although a number of websites already exist in this particular category, we believe that blackukonline.com is unique, because our coverage of news is not restricted to black issues. Our objective is to become the leading authority in electronic format in this field. In doing so, we believe that we could assist in helping to unite multicultural communities in the UK.
Development in new technology had led to a new type of audience - browsers - hence the reduction in newspaper circulation as recognised by ABC. Blackukonline.com is primarily aimed at males and females aged between 12 and 50 and comprising the following categories:
12 – 17 Young people with interests ranging from games to Education and training opportunities.
18 – 30 Politicians, aspiring professionals, decision makers, business, graduates, job seekers etc. Probably living near inner cities or may have migrated to rural areas, but want to keep up to date with community issues and news in electronic format.
30 – 50 Matured people – With strong community ties probably working on community projects, commerce, local authorities and charities.
