Black History Month Ends With A Slam PDF Print E-mail

The spoken word is taking centre stage next week when Southwark Council’s Black History Month closes with a poetry slam. The event is to be based around a competition, which will be judged by writer and lecturer Dorothea Smartt, who’s been publishing poetry for nearly 20 years.

The evening will be hosted by award-winning artist Jamal Msebele. Jamal, who is 14 years old, has won several writing awards including the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award (two years running) and the John Betjeman Young People’s Poetry Competition in 2006.

Southwark Council is keen to hear from any aspiring poets or spoken word performers who would like to compete in the event on Thursday October 30th.

There will also be the chance for locals to perform their own work in an open-mike session. Please contact us to sign up.

Councillor Lewis Robinson, executive member for Culture, Leisure and Sport said

“Black History Month has been a huge success this year, and the variety of events, from walks to films to museum exhibits, shows what a rich heritage of black history there is in Southwark.  And closing this year’s programme with a poetry competition will be a great way of celebrating all our local talent.”

Councillor Adele Morris, executive member for citizenship, equalities and communities, added

“The quality of the Black History Month programme that Southwark Council has run and supported this year shows that we can all be proud to live in a diverse borough with a thriving cultural scene.”

The event is taking place at the Peckham Library on Thursday October 30th. It starts at 8.00pm and ends at 10.00pm. Refreshments will be available from 7.00pm.

The event is free, and participants must register in advance to secure a place. There are £50 worth of music/book vouchers to be won in the competition.
